Macau’s Gaming Revenue Recovery in Q1 2023 and Investment in Community Projects

According to Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in the first quarter of 2023 reached about 45 percent of pre-Covid levels, with mass-market GGR at about 67 percent of 2019’s level, while the VIP segment only rose to 23 percent. The overall GGR rose to MOP34.6 billion ($4.3 billion) in the first quarter of 2023, up 95 percent from a year earlier, compared with MOP76.2 billion in the first quarter of 2019. Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong, recently revealed that Macau welcomed more than 98,000 tourists on Saturday, April 15th, and visitor arrivals in Macau this year have recovered to about 58 percent of pre-COVID levels. MGM Sets its Sites on Japan

In 2029, MGM is set to open an integrated resort casino in Osaka, Japan, after receiving official notification from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The initial investment for the project is $8.2bn, with the total outlay estimated to be $10bn between MGM and its partner Orix. The Osaka casino is expected to feature 2.5k hotel rooms, 400k square footage of conference space, another 300k sqft of expo space, and a 3.5k seat theater. The local population of 19m, which is three times that of Singapore, and the potential for significant local tourism, suggests that the Osaka casino could generate substantial revenue. Indiana Casino Revenue Drops in March, but Sports Betting Revenue Rises During March Madness

According to the Indiana Gaming Commission’s casino revenue report for March, the state generated $217.9 million in adjusted revenue from its 12 casinos. This is a 3.4% year-over-year decline, and deductions in March reduced the state’s taxable revenue to $211.4 million. Indiana collected $69 million in tax revenue from its casinos and another $65.4 million in wagering taxes. For the first nine months of the fiscal year, the state received a total of $484.4 million in taxes. Three of the state’s four heavy hitters posted year-over-year increases in casino revenue, with Hard Rock North Indiana in Gary leading the way with $38.2 million in revenue.
